Maison Alexandrins Le Cabanon Syrah
Maison & Domaines Les Alexandrins was established by Nicolas Jaboulet (of the Jaboulet family fame) the Perrin family from Château de Beaucastel, winemaker Guillaume Sorrel and viticulturist Alexandre Caso in 2015. The partnership of this ‘micro-négociant’ stemmed from a long-standing friendship, a shared love of gastronomy and an aim to create wines that represent the best of their appellations. Now run solely by Nicolas, Alexandre and winemaker Benoît Busseuil, Maison Les Alexandrins is the négociant side of the business and these wines incorporate fruit purchased from a selection of the top growers in each appellation of the Northern Rhône. In contrast, the fruit for the Domaine Les Alexandrins wines comes entirely from estate-owned vineyards in Saint Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage.
The ‘Cabanon’ wines are an excellent introduction to the Northern Rhône. The ‘Cabanon’ Viognier is sourced from vineyards planted at high elevations in the mountainous part of the Ardèche. It has lively aromas of white peach and ginger, tempered by lively acidity. The ‘Cabanon’ Syrah comprises 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier, aged exclusively in stainless steel. It displays a beautiful purity of fruit and subtle spiciness. The Crozes-Hermitage Blanc is a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne, fermented at low temperatures in two and three-year-old oak barrels, then aged on its lees for six months with 50% in old 600-litre barrels and 50% in stainless steel tanks. This adds complexity and richness to the honeyed and ripe stone fruit aromas, while the quality of the fruit ensures an incredibly long finish.
