There's an old saying that can be attributed to many things but always seems more pertinent when it comes to wine: "Life's too short to drink bad wine". We've always advocated that spending a little more will get you a lot more bang for your buck, so I've put together a mixed case of wine that I think show the finer side of wine to you the consumer; increased concentration of flavours, limited production, more time and effort given in making the wine and wines that give class in a glass. So we start in Italy, from vineyards not far from the southern tip of Lake Garda in the Lugana region. Ca dei Frati "Brolettino" uses the local Turbiana grape (otherwise known as Trebbiano di Lugana) and this wine is barrel fermented giving a richness and depth normally reserved for expensive white Burgundies. Speaking of which we then move to the southern part of the Burgundy region where the Domaine des Vieux Murs Pouilly Fuisse is resident. A stunningly rich Chardonnay, barrel fermented and aged before bottling giving a complexity seen only in wines such as Meursault, Chassagne Montrachet and Puligny Montrachet. Staying in France we move west to Bordeaux and the excellent Chateau Larose Perganson from the Haut Medoc region on the left bank of the Gironde river. Cabernet Sauvignon dominated and at time of writing still on the 2010 vintage this is a classy Claret. Just coming into its drinking window now but will give another ten years drinking pleasure at least. Staying with the 2010 vintage we go to Rioja and the Bodegas Riojanas Monte Real Gran Reserva Rioja; an old school Rioja - leather, sandalwood, redcurrant and vanilla spice. This is a wine that deserves a rich roast leg of lamb. We then take a hop over to the Clare Valley in South Australia and the wonderful Mount Horrocks Shiraz. Very small production and from grapes from fully certified organic vineyards, winemaker Stephanie Toole just keeps on producing quality wine after quality wine. Finally we head back to Europe and north eastern Italy where in the Veneto region the dark and sultry Amarone wines reside. The Torre del Falsco Amarone is nothing short of truly decadent.
